An Arsenal fan was stabbed last night after the minibus he was travelling in got lost in Rome and was ambushed by Roma fans ahead of the Champions League match between the two teams.

The fan was stabbed in the leg when Roma fans stormed the minibus in a piazza close to the Stadio Olimpico, about an hour before the game kicked off.

The injury was not serious and he was treated in a medical first aid post at the stadium.

He asked that his name, age and hometown not be released.

Italian police arrested a Roma fan involved in the attack.

A spokesman for the British embassy in Rome said: "He was on board a private bus when they got lost near the stadium. Some Roma fans tried to get onto the bus and in the ensuing fight he got injured in the leg. It's not clear if the weapon was a knife or a shard of glass from one of the windows on the bus which was broken."

The attack came a day after a group of Juventus fans assaulted a visiting Chelsea supporter ahead of the two teams' confrontation in Turin.

The English fan suffered bruises to his forehead and was treated in hospital.

AS Roma hooligans stabbed four Liverpool fans before a United Nations of European Football Associations Cup game today, the latest outbreak of violence in and around Italian soccer stadiums.

Just before the 8 p.m. kickoff, Roma fans throwing rocks and bottles clashed with police outside the stadium and beat up an Associated Press Television News crew.

About 4,000 Liverpool fans were in Italy's capital for the teams' first meeting since the English club beat Roma on penalty kicks in the 1984 Champions Cup final.

Fearing violence, authorities banned the sale of alcohol from noon today until 4 p.m. Friday in and around the stadium, in the city's historic center — where many Liverpool fans were staying — and at Ciampino airport.

Two Leeds United fans were stabbed to death in Istanbul on the eve of a UEFA Cup game against Turkish club Galatasaray last April.

Two Victims Remain Hospitalized

Today, three Roma supporters attacked two 27-year-old Norwegians outside Olympic Stadium two hours before kickoff, police said. The victims probably will be hospitalized for a week.

A British man needed surgery after another attack near the arena, while another Liverpool fan was hospitalized with stab wounds to the arm and thigh from a pre-dawn fight.

A gang of about 30 people kicked and punched an APTN cameraman and a reporter and destroyed their camera. The cameraman was treated at a hospital for a head cut.

Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton told the club's official Web site that he'd spoken with authorities in Rome, and "there is no suggestion that any of our fans have been causing trouble."

The clashes came ahead of United's game against Roma
Five Manchester United fans were stabbed ahead of the club's European Champions tie against Roma.

Violence erupted between a group of 50 rival fans on a bridge near the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Police used two baton charges to disperse the fans. It is not known if any British nationals were arrested.

The last time the two teams met in April, 11 fans were taken to hospital after violence in the stadium. The stab injuries are not said to be serious.

Consular officials are at the hospital where the fans have been taken. It is reported that two others, one of them a 16-year-old boy, needed treatment for the effects of drink.

A Foreign Office spokesman said the situation outside and inside the stadium was "calm."

Hooligan warning

He said: "It appears there was trouble outside the stadium.

"A number of British fans were injured and two British nationals have been arrested.

"Our consular officials are on the way to the hospital to check on conditions, the numbers involved and whether anyone needs assistance.

"The situation is now said to be calm both outside and inside the stadium."

The violence flared at the Pont Duca d'Aosta bridge, the scene of many clashes between visiting fans and Roma's Ultras contingent.

Last season there was trouble during the two clubs' Champions League game in Rome when fans were charged and beaten by riot police trying to regain control in the stadium.

Scuffles also broke out outside Old Trafford during the second leg of the tie, with 21 people arrested.

Greater Manchester Police officers travelled to Rome before Tuesday's game and issued a warning to hooligans not to attend.

Three Middlesbrough football fans have been stabbed and injured in Rome ahead of tonight's Uefa Cup match against Roma.

Ten other fans have reportedly been injured after trouble flared between the two sets of fans.

Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb confirmed several fans were hospitalised.

"There was an incident in one of the bars in a square in Rome. Some Boro fans were drinking in a bar and the bar was attacked by some Roma fans," he said.

"A number of Boro fans have been injured - a small number - and taken to hospital and received medical treatment.

"As far as I'm aware everybody is okay now, although one was retained in hospital but is in a stable condition."

A police spokesman said the Italian fans appeared to be "an organised gang" and were wearing scarves and bandanas around their faces.

Thirteen fans were injured in the trouble, and one 39-year-old Middlesbrough fan later underwent an operation for stab wounds to his back and chest.

Two other fans, aged 18 and 31, were also stabbed and needed hospital treatment.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said today: "Tables, chairs and bottles were being thrown, and police called to the scene broke up the fight with their batons."

Late last year a Middlesbrough fan died after being stabbed outside a bar in Amsterdam, after travelling to watch his team in the Uefa Cup.

Brendan O'Connor, 36, of London, had joined friends to travel to Holland where his team were playing Dutch side AZ Alkmaar last November.

ROME – AS Roma’s fans will be barred from attending their team’s return league match at Catania after three of the Sicilian club’s supporters were stabbed in clashes ahead of the match between the two teams in Rome on Sunday.

Three Catania fans were taking to hospital after suffering stab wounds and the Italian league’s regulatory body has responded by banning Roma fans from travelling to Sicily on May 18 when the two teams next meet.

The body concluded that the stabbings were a result of organised violence perpetrated by a section of Roma’s hardcore supporters.

Roma have often been caught up in unsavoury crowd incidents, notably in their last two Champions League home encounters against Manchester United, in April and then again in December.

Their fans have already been banned from attending tomorrow’s Italian Cup trip to Genoa to face Sampdoria while fans from Catania’s Sicilian neighbours Palermo are not allowed to attend their trip to Roma on Saturday.

Catania and Palermo are no strangers to fan hooliganism either as it was after a Sicilian derby between the pair last February that a policeman was killed, sparking a lot of soul searching in Italian football as it struggles to deal with a seemingly increasing and unchecked hooliganism problem.

Non sono mai incidenti fra ultras questi. Si tratta di agguati tesi a gente che va allo stadio tranquillamente e che si imbatte in imboscate di 15 contro uno o due giusto perche' poi si legga in cronaca, sono maestri in questo, ma non si legge mai di un arresto.
Poi quando si arriva al dunque e' gente che all' autogrill e' coraggiosamente scappata di fronte ai napoletani quando erano in numero pari a loro.
